Poetry Reading Featuring another selection of Brtitain's most
entertaining poets. Come join them for a sparkling summer evening of
poetry, conversation, and wine.
Oxfam’s 2005 Make Crime Pay promotion
increased both sales and donations of crime fiction, already one of our
most popular genres. Events were staged throughout the country with
notable crime writers, and our evening event saw Stella Duffy, Laura
Wilson and Natasha Cooper in discussion about their craft. A good crowd
enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining evening that blended conversation,
readings and a questions and answers session. | Oxfam Make Crime Pay Promotion Feb 2005
William Fiennes February 2005 | February 2005 also saw
the bestselling author William Fiennes visit the shop to discuss his
recent fact-finding trip to Honduras. Oxfam is working extensively to
establish women’s working cooperatives in the area and the
first-hand details he provided were informative and entertaining.
The 2005 Poetry Series
began with a flourish with readings from notable British poets Frank
Dullaghan, Sarah Maguire and Kevin Higgins. A huge crowd assembled once
again and enjoyed a packed evening culminating in a reading from Al
Alvarez. Also making welcome return appearances were Ian Duhig and
Roddy Lumsden. | The 2005 Poetry Series 2005
The Respighi Quartet
performed pieces by Beethoven, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky. The
evening was a huge success and fully attended. The Quartet has been
invited to perform at the shop again in June. | String Quartet April 23rd, 2004
Art Exhibition April 22 - May 31, 2004 | Oxfam s inaugural
in-store art exhibition featuring the first UK showing of Sue Fraser,
as well as Cameron Fraser and Carl Ghattas, was well attended. This is
the first time Fraser s series of lino prints have been shown in the
UK. Fraser s work is based around human interaction and enriched by a
fascination with the narratives that are carried through generations in
fairy tales, nursery rhymes and the mythology of individual families,
not least her own. | | |
The 2004 Oxfam Summer
of Poetry Festival, sponsored by the Arts Council England, was a
massive success with all proceeds going towards the Sudan appeal.
Poet-in-Residence Todd Swift organised a total of eleven events and a
competition which ran throughout August. The festival drew a huge
response from poetry lovers far and wide. The events ranged from a
masterclass by TS Elliot prize-winner Don Paterson, to a
children’s poetry workshop given by Heather Taylor. The
highlights were undoubtedly the three evening readings. The festival
began with ‘6 Poets for Sudan’ featuring Todd
Swift, Ian Duhig, Pascal Petite, Roddy Lumsden, David Harsent and Mimi
Khalvati. Over 80 people braved the intense summer heat and enjoyed a
fantastic evening.
The mid-point was marked by readings from Sean O’Brien and
Polly Clarke. Despite chaos on the tube, another good crowd turned up
to appreciate their poetry.
The finale was a memorable evening. Over 100 people squeezed into the
shop to listen to readings from Charlie Dark, Patience Agbabi, Wendy
Cope and Poet Laureate Andrew Motion. The event also marked the launch
of Oxfam’s ‘Poems for a Better Future’,
the culmination of a competition open to customers and professional
poets alike. The anthology was enthusiastically received and has now
sold out.
