Mike Kostyn went to the Congo as part of the relief effort after the eruption of the Nyiragongo volcano. Copies of Mike Kostyn's Congo report are available in the shop in return for a donation. Read his story.

The majority of stock sold in any Oxfam shop is donated by the public. There are several ways you can do this:

At your local Oxfam shop. For smaller quantities of donations, simply take bags into your nearest Oxfam shop. Please try to avoid leaving them outside when the shop is closed. Invariably, they will be opened and anything of value will be taken.

Gift banks. If you have more than 80 employees at your place of work, we can organise a Gift Bank. Simply contact Jackie Whitaker and the whole pack will be delivered to you: jawhitaker@oxfam.org.uk

Book Banks. Oxfam Book Banks are located throughout the country. Simply take unwanted books and drop them in. They are emptied regularly and distributed to the shops for sale.

Volunteers are the core of Oxfam’s presence on any High Street. The shops simply couldn’t function without them. It’s a partnership of mutual benefit. In return for your time, skills and expertise, you can make a real difference to the lives of poor and suffering people worldwide. Even a few hours a week can make a significant difference.

Almost £16 million was raised by Oxfam shops last year - shops that are run almost entirely by volunteers. As a shop volunteer, you will have the opportunity to try a variety of tasks, from customer service to keeping accounts and managing the stock. You can arrange the hours and days that suit you, and you'll get plenty of training and support. You'll also meet a great bunch of people.

As well as information about the progress of Oxfam’s work around the world, you will be given the opportunity to grow into a role within the organisation. Your skills will be recognised and used to their best advantage. Full training will be provided to enable you to maximise your contribution.

Oxfam will cover the travelling expenses involved with your volunteering and, should you work full days, we will be reimburse your lunch expenses. In addition, should you experience difficulties concerning your volunteering, guidance will be provided by advisers.
